BERNIE RHODES - THE MAN WHO INVENTED PUNK

Mick Jones and Tony James had bumped into Bernie Rhodes at a Deaf School gig. Jones thought Rhodes was a keyboard player. Rhodes replied he wasn’t, then pointed out that Jones was wearing one of his T shirts and countered by asking if Jones was in a band. Jones replied that he was forming a band called the London SS. Rhodes, apparently on the recoil from some spat with Malcolm was on the prowl for talent of his own and within minutes was telling Jones and James that he was their new manager. Oh and by the way, they would no longer be called the London SS. When Mick protested, Bernie, a Jew, brought them a whole load of Nazi badges and patches round and asked them which of them they wanted to wear on stage. Mick blanched and agreed a name change might possibly be in order.
